If I find time I'll have a look at this (probably just by looking through GRUB 2 for candidate backports and hoping that one of them helps). However, I should warn you that GRUB Legacy is extremely very unmaintained at this point; I've really just been doing last-resort patching for years, and this normally hasn't included debugging its filesystem code.
