Aligning defaults across distros does have value.
That said, a distro like Debian has a larger scope than say a desktop oriented one like Fedora. Debian is used on a broad spectrum of systems: from embedded to server to cloud to desktop. So I think it is valuable to gather feedback from all affected parties to make an informed decision.

What upstream is doing should not be the only driving factor.
