Kindly note that your understanding is correct that the Google Ads API currently does not use the term "AD_IMAGE" for assets within Performance Max campaigns. Instead, it uses the concept of Asset Field Types. I suggest you refer to the documents Mutate and Performance Max - Asset Groups to get more information. I hope this helps.
