Thanks to Dan and then Jack for highlighting this news, and for other kind
words said in response. I am going to respond to Jack’s message because it is
futile to try to fill in the names Dan missed, and I would only leave some out
myself.

Instead I’ll repeat what was said at the last CASPER workshop, that every byte
of raw EHT data recording every telescope in 2017, which ultimately became the
M87 image was processed by CASPER hardware running in most cases CASPER
firmware. The ROACH2 which is used as the R2DBE at all single dish stations to
digitize and record IFs: https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1086/684513/pdf
At the SMA the phased array and recording system is built into the ROACH2
driven SWARM:

And at ALMA while the phasing system is built into the legacy ASIC and FPGA
based XF correlator, an adapted ROACH2 is used by something called the “Phasing
Interface Card” or PIC which ultimately formats and transmits the raw data over
fiber to the VLBI recorders at the low site.

The EHT has deeply benefited from CASPER technology, and it’s been a real
pleasure for me, personally, to work within a the wonderfully supportive and
unselfish culture which seems to permeate CASPER. Sincere thanks to all of
you, you helped make the EHT folks look good.
