A bit late to the party, but perhaps you could get something from strings: $ strings /bin/tar | less /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 ,crS >gUa librt.so.1 __gmon_start__ _Jv_RegisterClasses clock_gettime libc.so.6 (... and so on, but some of this crap might be useful for your goal...) I guess strings is rather easy to write in C, if you do not have it.
