I feel your pain.  When I was rebuilding/upgrading the steering system, I
removed the fuel tank.  Improved access to the stern area but still
uncomfortable.  Is it time to pull and clean your tank?  :)

Touche's Racor with vacuum gauge is right where you're trying to access the
stern.  The port side through the quarter berth isn't much better.
