Spent just a bit more time going through the parquet spec. According to the 
backwards compatibility rules defined here:

The field in question

optional group booksIntersted (LIST) {
  repeated group array {
    required binary bookName (UTF8);
  }
}

Should have been interpreted correctly as:
{noformat}
// List<OneTuple<String>> (nullable list, non-null elements)
optional group my_list (LIST) {
  repeated group array {
    required binary str (UTF8);
  };
}
{noformat}
Unless we're somehow influencing that inferrrence through the generated avro 
schema.
