I'd worry a lot more about GUI and applications than about any bit of hardware. Pads in one form or another have been around for a long time. So far, they weren't particularly successful. The promise of the pad is basically that there are many tasks, either new but useful (and beyond what a smartphone could do) or traditionally requiring a laptop, that can be formulated such that all the interaction they require are a few taps and drags. Maybe the iPad will be able to do this. Maybe not.
