There is a walkthrough here to make the FGL1 drivers work with a R8500 and + on Mandrake 9.1 http://rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33676977 Read all the posts, installation is a little tricky.

You'll have to force installation because of XFree86 libGL.so.1.2 conflicts (I don't like to write awkward %post scripts to backup conflicting libraries, IMHO XFree86 should have had libGL libraries in a separated package).
