If the default entry has no vga mode option and if no global vga mode is defined for the bootloader, detect-resolution won't report any resolution. It shouldn't look for the default kernel vga mode, it should report the vga mode for the kernel used in make-boot-splash. I wrote a patch for detect-resolution so that it look for the vga mode associated with the initrd file. It also fixes some issues with grub (actually, it didn't work at all with grub ...).
