Sounds like a PATH problem.  Are you using KDM?  Do
you have these lines in /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc?

SystemPath=/usr//bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin::/usr/local/bin
UserPath=/usr//bin:/bin:/usr/bin::/usr/local/bin
