Please read a book about font technology before arguing. Bitmap fonts typically look better than equivalent Truetypes, as long as you aren't scaling them. You can actually embed bitmaps in TTF fonts for particular sizes so the TTF looks nice at that size and scales well for other sizes.
Well, IMHO the problem is that native bitmapped fonts are not antialiased,
and when you go over a certain point size (let's say 12 px) the antialias
gives better readability.


_good_ fonts are hard to make and expensive to buy.

So are good programs. Yet people make free software that works quite nicely.
There are plenty of free fonts (such as those shipped with Mandrake) that just need better hinting. That is not nearly as hard to do as making an original font, since it's mostly mechanical work.
