Improving ties to earth is reason for optimism
``From your perspective, what have been some of the most important developments of this century, and how will the world be different 100 years from now?''
The last 100 years have been very destructive. They really embraced (17th-century philosopher) Francis Bacon's theory that it was man's -- and I mean that deliberately -- God-given right to subdue the natural world; they began the big push for control and domination of the world, the embracing in a big way of the patriarchy. Until then, a number of the world's people lived more in relation to the earth, and Bacon's thought began the idea that it was OK to crowd them out.
My heart would like to see more equal distribution of leadership. It isn't particularly that I want women to dominate.
I am cautiously optimistic because I do feel there's a movement toward establishing a connection with the earth. Thanks to new technologies, we're able to see connections with our behavior and the earth. TV isn't all bad; we're able to see what's going on immediately. The world has become smaller, and we can see that we have to connect.
Is the year 2000 a big deal? It is a reason to celebrate. We need to make every day a big deal in the creation of world peace. Every day should be as important as the day we turn into the millennium. It's an opportunity to make new intentions, to look at what we've done and how to do things differently, to look at our resources and resolve to use them well. But we need to make new intentions every day, new resolutions. I have this great hope that we wake up.
