At least that's how the story should have begun, and it should have appeared in the American press on the next day, Saturday, February 13. I went back today and looked in both The Washington Post and The Washington Times and found no mention of this momentous breakthrough, however. Instead, what we got in today's Washington Times on page A17 was a spin article headlined "Libya seen as double winner in trial of Lockerbie suspects." The reason for the initial suppression and then the spin, if one reads the article carefully, is that the prosecutors have no case against the two Libyan "suspects." The spin article begins like this: LONDON--Pressured to send two suspects in the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am jetliner to face trial before Scottish judges, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi may be heading for a double victory: an end to U.N. sanctions and an acquittal of the suspects. Legal experts beleive it will be tough to prove that the men--purported intelligence agents who worked for Libyan Arab Airlines in Malta--actually built and planted the radio bomb taht blew up Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. --- A key state witness is a Libyan defector, who worked at the Libyan airlines office in Malta. U.S. investigators have said that Abdul Mejid Jiaaka, who fled to the United States in 1991, brought documents proving Libyan involvement in the disaster. Mr. Jiaaka, though, is not expected to testify that he saw suspects actually making or packing the bomb. [Robert] Black [professor of Scottish law] said defense lawyers will almost certainly challenge Mr. Jiaaka's credibility because of his defection to the United States. His testimony also would need independent corroboration under Scottish criminal law. (end excerpt) Oh drat! I guess that's why they wanted to bring them over here and administer the kind of justice Timothy McVeigh and James Earl Ray got, or Richard Jewell would have received if they could have stuck him with a government lawyer. So what happened to that rock-solid physical evidence they said they had on the Libyans? If you want to know why they are practically hiding the news of this big new development from us just go to http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/5260/. The Libyans are innocent, and we have known it all along. -- DC Dave news:alt.thebird column & poetry: http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Senate/2932/index.html ------ Aloha, He'Ping, Om, Shalom, Salaam.
