I use the awesome window manager and I am unable to use xscreensaver at all. I can change keyboard layouts within my wm through certain key combinations. These combinations do not work at the unlock screen of xscreensaver. This means that if the screen locks while the keyboard is set to a language different to the one that my password is written in, I cannot log back in, and my only option is to kill the Xserver and lose my work. Furthermore there is no way to tell what the current keyboard layout is. This is very annoying and counter-productive for non-American users. Xscreensaver needs at the very minimum to provide a widget through which the keyboard layout can be viewed and controlled. The argument that such a widget would clutter the screen is not worthy of serious discussion.
