As I told you yesterday evening, this is a known `feature': see #596684,
and see the section `Reverse search: using source specials rather than
SyncTeX' of the README.Debian file.

I think you would like the TeX-source-correlate-method mechanism to be
improved to automatically choose among SyncTeX and source specials
taking into account the output format choice.  Therefore I did

`TeX-evince-sync-view' uses D-BUS to communicate with Evince.  This is
worth investigating, if we could use evince for DVI files with SyncTeX
support.  I will try something as soon as I have some more time, do the
same yourself, please.
