There have been changes to nnir.el upstream again, which prevent 
current gnus from emacs-snapshot starting properly with the old 
one still bundled in gnus-bonus-el.

Please update that file or (probably better...) remove it for it has
been included in gnu emacs quite a while now 
(since timestamp: Fri 2008-06-06 22:53:14 +0000). 

Not sure about xemacs, though.

I've been using gnus-pers for quite some time. AFAIK, there are some
alternatives available by now, which I never looked into much; my setup
works. So, for me, it would be convenient to have gnus-bonus-el, but not
more than that.
