Thank you all for proposing patches to fix this issue. Indeed, the
check_known script is not behaving properly.

As for this proposed patch, I don't like it too much since an increase new
major kernel version (i.e. 4) will make it break again. I have committed
the attached patch to Tiger's git master branch and I will include it
(after some more testing) in the next Debian package release. In the patch
I change the logic and only act if the kernel version is earlier than 2.4
