It just so happens I was on the receiving end of GDAL's ABI breakages with
an in-house dependent package, I feel I have to post this link here:

This library has apparently been consistently horrible about compatibility,
and it seems that it's high time that its SONAME, and consequently its
package names, started changing in order to avoid harming its users.
