Sorry to say, I don't know how LXDE starts. I installed
it using aptitude. After login with userid peter and my
password, LXDE works.

As peter in a terminal window in LXDE, I started xeyes.

As root in a terminal window in LXDE, I attempted to start
gparted with the result noted previously,

> What if you try running gpartedbin directly instead of gparted?

peter@joule:~$ sudo gparted
[sudo] password for peter:
No protocol specified

(gpartedbin:2007): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
peter@joule:~$ su
Password:
root@joule:/home/peter# gparted
No protocol specified

(gpartedbin:2099): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
root@joule:/home/peter# gpartedbin
No protocol specified

(gpartedbin:2116): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0

Thanks, ... Peter E.
