Hi!

While working on the “reproducible builds” effort [1], we have noticed
that xz-utils could not be built reproducibly. One of the problem is
that the Gettext files always contain a different value for
POT-Creation-Date.

That's because the template for translations, xz.pot, is currently not
shipped as part of the source. So xgettext will be run everytime,
resulting in a new POT-Creation-Date and this slight loss of
information. This is not considered a good practice, as Santiago Vila
has explained in another bug report [2].

Upstream do ship xz.pot in its release tarballs. They also reference the
file to potential translators in README. So it would probably be better
to ship the file in Debian source.

Thanks!
