Some additional information: Many of the writeups on cups assume that a web-browser will be used. This is probably not a good idea. Certainly in my use I have set the browser permissions to prevent pop-up windows from appearing. This also prevents the user interaction to authenticate or authorise printing to a remote machine.
I'm not an expert on security, so do not read this as advice for your printer setup.
