The CLI interface to sphinxsearch has been deprecated by upstream at version 0.9.9-rc2 (back in 2009). Lots of outdated documentation still refer to it, but the official way of testing sphinx in version 2.2 is to use any mysql client (Sphinx has an API that is compatible with them). It may be wise to add either mariadb-client-core or mysql-client-core as dependency or suggestion for the package. Otherwise, first installation and debugging of sphinxsearch may indeed be a problem.
