It's strange to it appears the issue has resolved itself and I can now print checks. I moved gnucash files from ~ to ~/Gnucash though not sure how my moving files could've affected anything, probably something changed in the system between tries.
The issue can be closed unless someone wants to look into this further. Thanks,
