One non-obvious thing is missing here. After running the above command you have
a new unix socket under /tmp/ttyS0 that you should be able to connect to using
a serial terminal emulator. This is how autopkgtest connects to qemu. So after
running above command, check that everything works by running something like:

    $ minicom -D 'unix#/tmp/ttyS0'
