It's because we don't source /etc/profile or install a wrapper that
sets up the environment. Ubuntu does; their LightDM installs a Bash
script in /usr/sbin/lightdm-session that does all the work. snapd also
installs its own script in /etc/profile.d/ but it's sourced by login
shells only (as it should). Other display managers (and LightDM itself
on Ubuntu) "cheat the game" in order to provide convenience for their
users. I'm not really sure if there's a better means of doing this.
The fact that snaps don't show up due to this is quite annoying, I
agree.
