I am a long-time user myself, out of necessity: I have tried several times to use simple-scan (the only alternative I can find), and it just doesn’t offer the functionality of XSane. XSane is clunky and buggy, but it gets the job done. I have provided patches for XSane in the past, and will continue to do so when I can find the time. It’s a shame that there’s no better alternative, but I fear that flatbed scanning is increasingly a niche area, as people now more and more use their phones to scan documents on the rare occasions that they actually need a scan of a paper document.
