The backport of the aforementioned PR didn't fix the issue regarding sub-interpreters, unfortunately. Will have to wait until this is fixed upstream in PyO3. I do want to note though that this isn't a "regression" per se; this check was introduced to PyO3 because PyO3 isn't sound under the presence of multiple sub-interpreters. So, this check is basically a security measure.
