Thanks for the report.  I just hit the same thing, and figured it out.

I think we'll probably have it fixed soon.  For reference, it looks like
we should be providing flavor-specific emacsclients.  Currently the one
in emacs-bin-common (the only one) comes from the pgtk build, and when I
tried a lucid-built emacsclient with my lucid emacs daemon, the problem
went away.

So I'm in the process of moving emacsclient from emacs-bin-common to the
flavor-specific packages, i.e. emacs-pgtk, emacs-gtk, emacs-lucid, etc.
