Hi, I filled in a bug in the Kino BTS and it look like dvgrab doesn't directly use /dev/raw1394. Instead it use a library which work with libraw1394. If libraw1394 isn't up to date or compiled properly, it won't be able to work but it's not the fault of the Kino (or Dvgrab) devs.
