As Andreas said, mixed distribution solutions might give strange results. But to give some ideas on where the problem might originate, I will provide some notes. It is unclear to me what you mean by installing Debian Edu, as it is a cluster of profiles and more specific information is needed to know what you did. When that is said, I suspect the file /etc/lsb-release in the debian-edu-config package is the only file capable of changing what other programs believe to be the distribution name. Try to drop the package, modify the file or move the file away to see if it solve your problem.
