I just got around to testing miro again (now 1.2.3-1) and the bug is still there. Mouse works fine, but when I hit any key (even shift), the UI will freeze. The bug seems to be more difficult to trigger while a video is playing, but in an otherwise idle UI it seems pretty reproducible to me. This is on amd64 with fluxbox as the window manager.
