I couldn't log in as root as I didn't have a password for root. Even when I do "chroot" to the newly created environment, I cannot change password for root right away. The point is that the system is configured to use "shadow" passwords but the /etc/shadow and /etc/gshadow files are not created unless "pwconv" and "grpconv" are run.
