Upstream confirms that this is a quirk in the protocol:

"The second bug is a quirk of the protocol.  Someone can start chatting
to you before the buddy list with their "real name" has downloaded
from the server.  Since the buddy list is downloaded once a minute,
there's a window of opportunity for someone to login, start talking to
you, before you've seen them online/seen their 'real name'".
