Package: vm Version: 8.0.11-1 Severity: important In VM's default setup messages containing non-ASCII characters are sent as "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-2022-jp". They look garbled in every MUA (Gnus, VM, Rmail, Icedove) I've tried. If an iso-2022 encoding is used at all, at least "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-2022-7bit" should be used, which would make the messages readable in Emacs-based MUAs.
Note that this applies to messages sent in VM under emacs22, with emacs-snapshot the situation is even worse: all non-ASCII characters silently disappear when the message is sent! This can be worked around by setting vm-mime-8bit-composition-charset to "utf-8" which makes VM send messages as "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8", although the docstring for vm-mime-8bit-composition-charset wrongly claims that this variable has no effect. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.27.8-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages vm depends on: ii emacs-snapshot [emacsen] 1:20081205-2 The GNU Emacs editor (development ii emacs21 [emacsen] 21.4a+1-5.6 The GNU Emacs editor ii emacs22-gtk [emacsen] 22.2+2-5 The GNU Emacs editor (with GTK use ii make 3.81-5 The GNU version of the "make" util ii ucf 3.0011 Update Configuration File: preserv vm recommends no packages.
