You should probably change pppd > to support arbitrary arguments to the unit configuration directive.
I had a quick look at the source, and it uses int unit absolutely everywhere as an identifier, so it's probably a lot of work to support arbitrary interface names. I also tried filing a bug upstream, but it never appeared.
