I read this in the README.Debian of readahead package:

"WARNING: Do not profile if you have preload enabled, because in this case,
files loaded by preload would be added to the lists and this slows down future
boots."

It would be nice if preload (or its init scripts) is able to detect when 
readhead profiling and delay its start until next boot or until readhead ends 
the profiling process.
