could you try adding these to your .Xdefaults:

*VT100.allowWindowOps: true
*VT100.allowTitleOps: true
*VT100.allowFontOps: true

you can avoid X restarts by doing a 

xrdb -merge ~/.Xdefaults

afterwards.
