To be perfectly fair, I'm sure only that wicd needs poking and
wpa_supplicant on its own doesn't.
But I'd be surprised if network manager, that seems the most
widespread solution, didn't work and no one had complained.
I think it is just a bug in wicd that is easly worked around.
