This must be a misunderstanding.  Debian Squeeze provides several
tools to register init.d scripts with the system, and install_initd
and remove_initd are among them.  In addition, the traditional
update-rc.d should be used for native Debian package, and update-rc.d
will call insserv as a internal implementation detail.
