| Sorry but no. You are looking for an excuse to not read the manual.

For the benfit of the reader, the "RE" is ambiguous in the manual
page. A simple wording would be all that is needed to make it stand
clear.

| I don't know where did you got that idea, but for GNU packages I would
| consider it fundamentally flawed. This is what Debian policy says:
|
| 12.4. Preferred documentation formats
| -------------------------------------
|
| The unification of Debian documentation is being carried out via HTML.

That applies to extensive documentation. Above it, there is "12.1 Manual pages".

Debian is not a GNU Project (Hurd), where info pages are the primary means of
documentation. In Debian Linux the manual pages are the primary access
to access the documentation system. Therefore the information in them
is important for the reader.

The is no problem providing extensive documentation in other means,
like info.

It's just that the information in the manual page regarding the "-I"
is not clear, or if you will, precise enough, to be understood
unambiguously; people don't necessarily think grep(1) any more as of
2011 when they see "RE" or "regexp".

It wouldn't be a big change to improve the page.
