Are you completely sure it's not an intersection of two bugs (one in OOo, and one in the LM fonts)? While looking for a workaround, I saw this comment[1] which seems to (a) point the finger at the LM fonts, and (b) imply that a solution to the upstream bug may not fix the original problem (ie. can't select "regular" LMRoman variant).
