It is usually a good idea to add stuff to an existing distro (like Debian or Ubuntu) rather than creating a new one. Xorg is pretty good at autoconfiguring video cards these days, so your idea should not be nessecary. The parts that are needed are probably already done by Ubuntu, so you could just use Ubuntu.
