I just looked around a bit on my box via "dpkg -l" and saw that I had
        archie, xarchieR6
        dvips, dvipsk
        fvwm, fvwmR6
        ghostview, ghostviewR6
        xdvi, xdvik
        xpm, xpmR6
installed. That is really quite some avoidable clutter.

Not that I am in favour of creping featurism---but could we find a means of
declaring in the control file that the installion of foobar should delete
foobarpre?

What I can think of as a quick hack is the "Conflicts:" field but this still
forces the sysadmin the do it by hand.

Better would be something along the lines of a field "Replaces:" with values
as for the "Depends:" field. Then dvipsk-5.58f-3, to pick one example, could
say "Replaces: dvips (<5.58f-2)" and my copy of dvips-5.58f-2 would have been
taken away automatically by dpkg.
