As long as packages like network-manager depends on systemd and that
dependency causes the init system to be changed accordingly, you can
expect the vast majority of desktops will switch, making systemd not
only the default but also without a feasible alternative.

Using something different from systemd will not be impossible but
introduce that many shortcomings few people will take the burden.

Whether you like it or whether you don't.
