It turns out that doing pristine-tar by hand often gives different results, as I discovered: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1065445 So I don't know what best to recommend, personally. Anyway, once this bug is fixed, definitely using gbp import-orig is the way to go (and probably even before it is). Best wishes, Julian
