I doubt this is a Microsoft-approved method. There's a long history of people making invalid assumptions based on how Windows does things. Such as tucking a bit of data outside the partition and wondering why the program breaks when Linux creates a partition there. Or putting a bit of information in a "known location" on the hard disk and then wondering why the program breaks when the disk is defragmented.
