Following the recent upgrade of xserver-xorg I tried upgrading xserver-xorg-core again. The problem with ctrl-alt-esc in Icewm has gone away but there is a new bug. Crtl-alt-del no longer closes X though I can do so via the popup panel in Icewm.
I have reverted to the backported version of xserver-xorg-core.
