Ubuntu 9.10 still uses the version of gtk+ that causes the crash but it
is fixed in Ubuntu 10.04.  You can either:

* upgrade your system to the beta version of Ubuntu 10.04 [press ALT+F2
and type "update-manager -d" in the dialog that pops up]

* wait until the final release of Ubuntu 10.04 next month, and upgrade
your system then.

* manually get hold of the latest Ubuntu package for gtk+2.0 from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/gtk+2.0/2.19.7-0ubuntu1 and
install it.  I don't recommend this, as it could break a lot of other
things for you!!
