OK, this works: <http://www.liberiangeek.net/2010/07/disableturnoff-startup-booting-sound-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx/> I've found just changing System –> Administration –> Login Screen uncheck ‘Play login sound’ works & it's not necessary to modify ‘Gnome Login Sound’ in System –> Preferences –> Startup Applications. Sorry for the added "noise".
